Comparative neck and shoulder anatomy

Overview: This infographic spread compares the anatomical differences between the neck and shoulder region of rocky mountain goats and humans and their importance in relationship to climbing. Rocky mountain goats are prolific climbers located in the Rockies running from the US, through Canada, to Alaska. This visualization looks into how both species excels at scaling sheer rock faces.

Challenges: One challenge was in determining the focus of the musculature comparison. Is it more impactful to show all the shoulder and neck muscles involved in climbing? Or clearer to show just a few muscles so the viewer can more easily compare scale, insertion, and origin?

Solution: For clarity and conciseness, this infographic chooses the most high level important aspects that pertain to the skeletal and musculature of the neck and shoulder of both man and goat. From this, the viewer can quickly get a big picture idea of how the neck and shoulder contribute to the climbing prowess of both.
