DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction sequence
DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction
Overview: This sequence of illustrations depict the surgical procedure of a DIEP flap breast reconstruction and transplantation with sensory nerve repair. Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforators (DIEP) flap surgery involves using a flap from the patient’s lower abdomen as donor tissue. It is used to reconstruct the breast volume that is removed by mastectomy.
Target audience & challenge: This piece is meant to educate surgeons-in-training and students. The main challenge was to break down a complicated procedure (in the operating room, this surgical procedure takes around 8 hours). From here, we took the distilled steps and laid it out in an easily understandable spread.
