Bladder cancer
Overview
Bladder cancer begins in the lining of the bladder and can spread deeper into the bladder wall if left untreated. The most common form starts in the cells lining the inside of the bladder and is called urothelial carcinoma.1
Causes
Tobacco use is the leading cause, responsible for roughly half of cases in men and about a third in women. Occupational exposure to certain industrial chemicals, prior pelvic radiation, some chemotherapy drugs, and frequent urinary tract infections also raise risk.2
Symptoms
Blood in the urine is the most common warning sign. Other symptoms include pain during urination, frequent urination, a persistent urge to urinate, and in more advanced cases, weight loss and fatigue.1
Treatment
Treatment depends on whether the cancer is confined to the bladder lining or has spread into the muscle wall. Options range from surgical removal of the tumor through the urethra to drug treatments delivered directly into the bladder, and in more advanced cases, partial or complete removal of the bladder.2
