Overview

Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, affecting nearly 1 in 100 people, and it accounts for about 4 out of 5 cases of an overactive thyroid.1

How Graves’ Disease Develops

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune condition. The immune system produces an antibody called thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) that attaches to thyroid cells and mimics the effect of thyroid stimulating hormone, prompting the gland to produce far more thyroid hormone than the body needs.2
Researchers aren’t sure why some people develop this autoimmune response. It’s thought to result from a combination of genetic predisposition and an outside trigger such as a viral infection.1

Symptoms

Because excess thyroid hormone speeds up many of the body’s functions, common symptoms include weight loss, fatigue, heat intolerance, tremor, and a rapid or irregular heartbeat. Some people also develop eye changes such as bulging eyes, a hallmark sign associated with Graves’ disease.1
