Hyperglycemia

Overview

Hyperglycemia happens when there’s too much glucose in the blood. It’s also called high blood sugar, and it’s most often associated with diabetes, though it can occur for other reasons too.¹

Causes

Hyperglycemia occurs when the body has too little insulin or can’t use the insulin it has effectively. Contributing factors include obesity, a diet high in processed carbohydrates and saturated fats, certain medications such as corticosteroids, skipped or insufficient diabetes medication doses, and physical or emotional stress, which triggers hormones that raise blood sugar.²

Symptoms

Hyperglycemia usually doesn’t cause noticeable symptoms until glucose levels are significantly elevated. Symptoms tend to develop slowly over days or weeks, and the longer levels stay high, the more serious they can become.²

Why It Matters

Left untreated, chronic hyperglycemia can lead to serious complications including nerve damage, eye disease, and kidney damage, and severe cases can progress to a diabetic coma requiring emergency care.¹
