Lipoprotein(a)

Overview

Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a type of LDL particle attached to an additional protein called apolipoprotein(a). It’s an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, meaning it can raise risk even when standard LDL cholesterol levels are within a healthy range.1

Why It’s Different From LDL

Unlike LDL cholesterol, which is strongly influenced by diet and can be lowered with standard treatments, Lp(a) levels are almost entirely determined by genetics and stay relatively stable throughout a person’s life. This makes lifestyle changes largely ineffective at lowering it.2

Health Risks

High Lp(a) is linked to increased risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, and narrowing of the arteries. Its structure makes it more prone to promoting plaque buildup, inflammation, and clotting compared to LDL alone.2,3

Prevalence and Testing

Roughly 1 in 5 people worldwide have elevated Lp(a), though most don’t know it since it isn’t part of routine cholesterol testing. Several major cardiology and lipid associations now recommend testing Lp(a) at least once in every adult to better assess cardiovascular risk.2,3
