What Is Merkel Cell Carcinoma?

Merkel cell carcinoma, often abbreviated MCC, is a rare but highly aggressive form of skin cancer that arises from neuroendocrine cells within the skin. For advanced or metastatic MCC that has spread beyond the original site, immunotherapy has become the preferred first line systemic treatment, representing a significant advance over the more limited options previously available for this aggressive cancer.6

Avelumab, an antibody that blocks a specific immune checkpoint protein, became the first immunotherapy approved for advanced MCC in 2017, with roughly one third of patients whose cancer had not responded to prior treatment showing meaningful improvement, with responses lasting an average of ten months. Additional checkpoint inhibitors, including pembrolizumab, have since received approval for this indication as well.7

Prevention

Limiting cumulative ultraviolet exposure through consistent sunscreen use, protective clothing, and avoiding tanning beds represents an important preventive strategy, given the significant role UV exposure plays in many MCC cases.2
