Osteoporosis
Overview
Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones, reducing bone density and mass and making fractures far more likely. It often progresses silently, with many people unaware they have it until a bone breaks.1
Causes
The drop in estrogen levels during menopause is one of the strongest risk factors for osteoporosis in women. It can also occur as a primary condition or secondary to other diseases, certain medications, or nutritional deficiencies such as insufficient calcium or vitamin D.2
How It’s Diagnosed
Osteoporosis is typically diagnosed by measuring bone mineral density using a noninvasive imaging test called dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The hips, spine, and wrists are the bones most commonly affected by fractures.1,2
Treatment
Early treatment can ease pain and slow or halt further bone loss. Approaches typically combine diet and lifestyle changes with medications aimed at preserving or rebuilding bone density.1
