Overview

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder that causes fluid filled cysts to grow throughout the kidneys, gradually impairing their function. It’s the most common inherited kidney disease and accounts for about 2% of kidney failure cases in the United States.1

Causes

PKD results from inherited genetic mutations. Autosomal dominant PKD is the most common form and usually appears in adulthood between ages 30 and 50, requiring the mutation from just one parent. Autosomal recessive PKD is rare and typically presents in infancy.2

Symptoms

Common symptoms include frequent headaches, high blood pressure, flank pain, and blood in the urine. About half of cases produce no noticeable symptoms at all. Left untreated, PKD can also lead to complications such as kidney stones, liver cysts, heart valve disease, and brain aneurysms.1

Treatment

There is currently no cure for PKD. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms, controlling blood pressure, and slowing disease progression. One medication, tolvaptan, is approved specifically to slow progression in people at high risk of rapid decline. Many people eventually require dialysis or a kidney transplant.1
