Overview

Crohn’s disease is a chronic condition in which the immune system causes inflammation somewhere along the digestive tract. It most commonly affects the small intestine and the beginning of the large intestine, though it can appear anywhere from the mouth to the anus.1

Causes

The exact cause isn’t known, but researchers believe it results from a combination of genetics and an abnormal immune response, in which the immune system mistakenly attacks bacteria normally present in the intestines, triggering inflammation. Risk increases with a family history of the disease, and smoking is known to raise risk and worsen symptoms.2

Symptoms

Common symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramping and pain, and weight loss. Symptoms tend to come and go in cycles, active periods called flares are followed by periods of remission when symptoms improve or disappear.1

Treatment

Treatment aims to achieve and maintain long term remission. Depending on severity, this can involve medication, lifestyle changes, and in some cases surgery to manage complications.1
