Systemic Sclerosis
Overview
Systemic sclerosis, also known as scleroderma, is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the body to produce excess collagen, leading to thickening and hardening of the skin and, in many cases, internal organs. It ranges from limited forms affecting mainly the skin to diffuse forms that can involve the lungs, heart, and kidneys.
Symptoms
Common early symptoms include Raynaud’s phenomenon, along with skin thickening, tightening, and swelling, often starting in the fingers and hands.
As the condition progresses, symptoms can include joint pain, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath if the lungs are involved, and digestive issues.
Causes
Systemic sclerosis occurs when the immune system triggers excessive collagen production, leading to fibrosis (scarring) of the skin and, in more severe cases, internal organs. The exact trigger for this immune response isn’t fully understood.
Risk Factors
- Sex — significantly more common in women
- Age — most often diagnosed between 30 and 50
- Family history of autoimmune disease
- Certain genetic and environmental factors, including silica exposure
Complications
Depending on which organs are affected, systemic sclerosis can lead to lung fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, heart involvement, kidney complications, and significant digestive tract issues — making early diagnosis and monitoring for organ involvement especially important.
