Overview

What is sepsis?
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to an infection becomes dysregulated, leading to widespread inflammation, tissue damage, and potential organ failure. It can be triggered by infections in the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, or bloodstream, and it progresses rapidly if not recognized and treated early. In sepsis, the immune system, instead of staying localized to fight the infection, releases chemicals into the bloodstream that cause systemic inflammation, impair blood flow, and disrupt normal organ function. This can lead to complications such as septic shock, characterized by dangerously low blood pressure and inadequate oxygen delivery to tissues. Prompt treatment with antibiotics, intravenous fluids, and supportive care is critical, as early intervention significantly improves survival and reduces long-term complications associated with Sepsis
